Switzerland installs , solar panels
AlpinSolar, a joint venture between three Swiss companies, has successfully completed the installation of , solar panels on the Muttsee Lake dam in Switzerland, Reuters reported . Located at , m above sea level, this is the highest dam in Europe and energy production has already begun.
With a project like AlpinSolar, the Swiss have just begun their large-scale transition from nuclear energy to green energy , as planned in
The sun and snow generate more energy
The Muttsee Lake Dam is located in the Swiss canton of Glarus, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The project aims to generate million kilowatts annually to power homes.
To this end, , solar panels have been lined up against the dam wall, which also houses a hydroelectric plant . The width of the solar panel installation is one kilometer and the array is designed to generate megawatts of electricity.
For the project, Axpo, an energy company in the joint venture, used bifacial glass-glass solar modules manufactured by another Swiss company, Megasol. Equipped with mm ( in) frames, the panels can withs C Level Executive List tand the snow load expected in the Swiss Alps.
Although installing solar panels on snow-covered mountains may seem counterintuitive, Axpo expects them to work better in these regions, especially in winter. This is because unlike lower altitudes, which are dominated by fog in the winter months, the sun shines brightly at higher altitudes in Switzerland.
An added benefit is the white snow, which reflects sunlight onto the solar panels, also resulting in higher yields when working at lower temperatures. With this, Axpo hopes to generate three times more energy from the sun in the winter months, such as February and March, compared to the rest of the year.
In the coming years, it plans to build , solar projects in the lowland and mountainous regions of the country. Last year, the Swiss government amended its Energy Law to allow faster approvals for new solar plants in the country, Reuters said in its report.
Denner, a discount chain that is also part of AlpinSolar, has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the project. Interestingly, this is the first PPA to be signed in the country.
